Philpstoun

A small village of West Lothian, Philpstoun (occasionally Philipstoun) lies 3 miles (5 km) east of Linlithgow and to the north of the Forth and Clyde Canal. The village was established in the later 19th C. in association with the Philpstoun Oil Works, which began processing oil shale in 1883 and closed around 1931. Philpstoun North and Philpstoun represent a pair of oil-shale bings. Until 1951, the village had a railway station on the Edinburgh-Glasgow line that still passes immediately to the north. Old Philpstoun is located a half-mile (1 km) to the east.
