Balelone

(Baile Lòin, Baile Lion)
Western Isles

A location and 343-ha / 850-acre farm in the NW of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Balelone (Gael: Baile Lòin or, incorrectly, Baile Lion) lies a quarter-mile (0.5 km) northeast of Balmartin. The fine house here, with wings to the north and south, was built in 1820 as the Factor's House and an early occupant was Dr. Alexander MacLeod (An Dotair Ban - 'the fair haired doctor'). While owned by a Colonel Henry Cator of Norwich, the farm was the focus of Scotland's last land raid in 1952, when local crofters wished to extend their holdings but the landowner refused. An amicable settlement was eventually reached. The North Uist Highland Games takes place in a field each July.
