Upper Coll

(Col Uarach)
Western Isles

A small village on the east coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Upper Coll (Gael: Col Uarach) overlooks Broad Bay a half-mile (1 km) to the southwest of Coll and 2 miles (3 km) north of Aird of Tong. Formerly a modest farm, William Hesketh Lever, Lord Leverhulme (1851 - 1925), attempted to create a dairy industry here in the early 1920s to supply milk to Stornoway. However the scheme failed, having suffered land raids by landless ex-servicemen, despite the support of the local people.
