Cuier

(Cuidhir)
Western Isles

A small settlement with a church and cemetery on the northwest coast of Barra in the Outer Hebrides, Cuier (Gael: Cuidhir) is located a half-mile (1 km) south of Cleat and 4 miles (6 km) north of Castlebay. The Abhainn Cuier flows past the settlement to the sea, while Dun Cuier (sometimes Dun Chuidhir), a fairly well-preserved galleried broch dating from the 4th century, lies to the west.

Within the cemetery is a memorial to three Hong Kong Chinese seamen killed when the SS Idomeneus was torpedoed by the German submarine U-67 on 15th September 1917. Chan Sung and Chung Cheong are buried at West Bay on Vatersay, while Leong Kow lies at Caragrich Point.
