Smerclate (Smercleit, Smeircleit)
Western Isles

A scattered hamlet on the southwest coast of South Uist, Smerclate (Gael: Smercleit or Smeircleit) lies amongst small lochans a half-mile (1 km) south of Garrynamonie and a similar distance north of Pollachar. North Smerclate lies around the B 888 road, while the remainder of the settlement is located to the southwest amidst machair which forms part of a Special Protection Area noted for its breeding corncrakes.
