Eochar

(Eochdar, Iochdar, Iochdair)
Western Isles

The largest of a series of crofting townships on the north coast of South Uist, the crofting township of Eochar (sometimes Eochdar, Gael: Iochdar or Iochdair) lies a mile (1.5 km) to the west of the A 865 road, 1¼ miles (2 km) west southwest of the causeway linking the island to Benbecula. The Eochar Primary school is located to the east at Bualadubh. Fishing on numerous lochs nearby and the manufacture of jewellery are important contributions to the local economy.
