A location in E Edinburgh, formerly a hamlet in South Leith Parish, Jock's Lodge lies to the northeast of Holyrood Park, 2 miles (3 km) east of the city centre and 1¼ miles (2 km) west of Portobello. Here London Road divides into Portobello Road, once also known as London Road, and Willowbrae Road, the current road to London and the south, designated the A1. St. Margaret's Well was once located here, but moved to the 19th C. to create space for the extension of St. Margaret's Railway Workshops, an immense steam-age locomotive maintenance facility which closed in 1967. This was in turn replaced by St. Margaret's House and Meadowbank House, a pair of large office blocks both originally occupied by government, together with the eastern part of the Meadowbank Stadium sports complex.
