Riccarton

City of Edinburgh

A location and former estate on the western outskirts of the city of Edinburgh, Riccarton lies a mile (1.5 km) to the north of Currie. The Riccarton Estate was formerly owned by the Gibson-Craig family. Riccarton House was built around a late 15th-century tower-house, which had been home to noted lawyer Sir Thomas Craig (c.1538 - 1608), and was extended by William Burn (1789 - 1870) in 1827. The house fell into disrepair following World War II and was demolished in 1956.

The campus of Heriot-Watt University now occupies much of the estate to the west of Riccarton Mains.
