Flemington
South Lanarkshire

A former coal-mining and cotton-spinning village in South Lanarkshire, Flemington is located a mile (1.5 km) southeast of Cambuslang, with which it is contiguous, and 2½ miles (4 km) northwest of Blantyre. Located here were the Hallside Steelworks (1873) and the Flemington Steelworks (1890), the former struggling on until 1982. The 32-ha (80-acre) site was subsequently covered with a thick layer of mixed colliery waste and sewage sludge, together with 500,000 earth-worms. The area was then planted with 250,000 trees by the Scottish Greenbelt Company. Drumsargad Castle is a motte located to the east, while Dechmont Hill rises to the south.
