One of a collection of small crofting townships which comprise the locality of Melness to the west of Tongue Bay in Sutherland, West Strathan lies on the west bank of the Strath Melness Burn, a half-mile (1 km) south southwest of Achininver and 4½ miles (7 km) north northwest of Tongue.
