Dingleton

Scottish Borders

A settlement which has become a suburb of Melrose in the Scottish Borders, Dingleton lies in the shadow of the Eildon Hills on the B6359 road a half-mile (0.8 km) south of the town centre. Melrose Golf Club is located here. Dingleton Hospital was built by the General Board of Commissioners in Lunacy in 1867 and continued to serve those with mental illness until it closed in 2001. In 1949, it was the first in Britain to operate an open-door policy allowing the patients freedom from locked wards. The main building has been redeveloped as private flats.
