A location in N Midlothian, Sheriffhall is now principally associated with a significant six-way roundabout on the A720 Edinburgh Bypass, a mile (1.5 km) northwest of Dalkeith. There are farms at Sheriffhall and Sheriffhall Mains. The late 17th-century Sheriffhall House once stood next to the former, a property of the Duke of Buccleuch, but was undermined by his coal pits and demolished. The stair-tower remains as a doo-cot.
