Ceannabeinne

Highland

A location on the north coast of Sutherland in the NW Highlands, Ceannabeinne lies a half-mile (1 km) west of Rispond and 2½ miles (4 km) east southeast of Durness. There was once a village with 50 people living here, but it was cleared in the early 1840s. This was one of the last of the Highland Clearances, but did not go smoothly, with a riot taking place in 1841. The house high above the A838 road represents the former school, now converted into a holiday cottage. A heritage trail around the former village opened in 2009. Beinn Ceannabeinne rises to 383m (1256 feet) 1¼ miles (2 km) to the southwest.
