A village on the northern boundary of South Lanarkshire Council Area, Law lies 2 miles (3 km) northwest of Carluke in the shadow of Law Hill which rises to 202m (663 feet). It developed in association with coal mining from the 1790s and with a railway station established in 1848. This developed into Law Junction Station at the southeastern end of the Wishaw Deviation but closed in 1965, as a result of the Beeching cuts. The West Coast Main Line still passes to the north of the village. Law Hospital was built a mile (1.5 km) to the northeast in 1939 as part of a programme of Emergency Medical Centres for use during World War II. Its life was extended but the military-style layout of separate nissen huts proved unsuitable for modern healthcare and it closed in 2001. Mauldslie Castle, built in the 1790s by Robert Adam for the 5th Earl of Hyndford, was demolished in 1959.
