A commuter village in South Lanarkshire, Braidwood is located 2 miles (3 km) south of Carluke and 7 miles (10 km) northwest of Carstairs Junction. Once a centre of limestone production, Braidwood was an ancient barony that belonged to the Earls of Douglas, Earls of Angus and the Lockharts of Carnwath, amongst others.
