An underground fire caused the deaths of sixty-three men and boys at the Mauricewood Pit near Penicuik (Midlothian) on the 5th September 1889. The Shotts Iron Company had produced coal and iron-stone from the mine since 1875. A granite memorial was unveiled on the 100th anniversary of the tragedy.
