Battle of Glenshiel

1719

The Battle of Glenshiel was the action which brought an end to the short-lived Jacobite Rebellion of 1719 or 'Little Rising'. On the 19th June 1719, the Jacobite army under George Keith, the 10th Earl Marischal (c.1693 - 1778), was defeated by a Government force under General Joseph Wightman. The Jacobites had been assisted by Spanish soldiers who despite fighting bravely were forced to surrender, while the Highlanders were able to disperse to their homes under the cover of fog.
