Warrender

Part of the Marchmont district on the southside of Edinburgh, generally with larger and grander Victorian tenements arranged in crescents and streets, Warrender lies to the south of The Meadows and east of Bruntsfield. It takes its name from a family which owned Bruntsfield House and estate. Sir George Warrender (1825 - 1901) fued the estate for housing in the 1870s, with the street names of Lauderdale, Thirlestane, Spottiswood and Arden all honouring female members of his family. Warrender Baths date from 1887 and James Gillespie's High School was built around the 16th C. Bruntsfield House.
