Situated 2½ miles (4 km) northeast of Monifieth in SE Angus, the Carlungie Earth House comprises a complex series of structures that date from the Iron Age (1st - 2nd centuries AD). A paved passage once stretched for 45.5m (150 feet) underground. This was approximately 2m (6½ feet) in height, although it has now lost its roof. The walls comprise boulders and flagstones and the passage terminates at a small chamber suggested to have been a workshop. The structure was uncovered during ploughing in 1949 and is now under the stewardship of Historic Environment Scotland.
