Located a mile (1.5 km) north of Monifieth in SE Angus, the Ardestie Earth House is a curved underground structure, 24m (80 feet) in length, which is thought to have been the cellar to a roundhouse, but now lies roofless. Dating from the Iron Age (1st - 2nd century AD), it was discovered in 1949 and is now under the stewardship of Historic Environment Scotland. Found during excavations in 1949-50, were a 'fire-bowl', a stone-lined cistern and parts of a Roman amphora.
A similar structure exists at nearby Carlungie.
