The 'Atlantic Bridge' at Clachan-Seil, Seil Island

An impressive single-arch stone hump-back bridge connecting the west coast of the mainland with Seil Island over the Clachan Sound, the Clachan Bridge is located 8 miles (13 km) southwest of Oban. Built by John Stevenson of Oban in 1792 to a design by Robert Mylne (1733 - 1811), the bridge finds fame as the 'Bridge over the Atlantic'. With an overall width of 91m (300 feet) and a span of around 22m (72 feet), it rises to a height of 12m (39 feet) above the channel bed. The suggestion that the bridge was designed by the noted civil engineer Thomas Telford is refuted by Paxton and Shipway, notable historians of Scottish civil engineering.
