Garbh Eilean

(Rough Island)

The largest of the Shiant Islands, Garbh Eilean (or Rough Island) rises steeply to 160m (524 feet) in The Minch, 16 miles (26 km) east of Tarbert. Steep cliffs of columnar basalt fringe its northern and eastern shores. Uninhabited since the early 20th century, the island is now used for grazing sheep. It is connected by an isthmus to Eilean an Tighe to the south.
