Forter Castle

A 16th century tower house of NW Angus, Forter Castle lies in Glen Isla 12 miles (19 km) north northwest of Alyth. The castle comprises four storeys and a garret and was built on the L-plan. It was a former stronghold of the Ogilvies that was stormed along with Airlie Castle by the Campbells of Inverewe in 1640 on the instructions of Archibald Campbell, the 8th Earl of Argyll (1598 - 1661). Briefly the property of the MacThomas family, the castle eventually fell into a ruinous state. However, it was restored around 1990 and remains occupied today as a private residence.
