Calvay

(Calbhaigh)

A small uninhabited island in the Sound of Eriskay, Calvay (Gael: Calbhaigh) rises to 21m (68 feet) at the eastern end of the Sound. It was here that the SS Politician ran aground in 1941 with its cargo of whisky, which was famously 'rescued' by the residents of Eriskay. Another island named Calvay lies at the mouth of Loch Boisdale to the north, and yet another at the head of Loch Eynort.
