Grimsay

(Griomasaigh)

A significant but low-lying island in Bagh nam Faoileann to the southeast of Benbecula, Grimsay (Gael: Griomasaigh) provides a stepping-stone between causeways conveying the B891 road en route to the jetty at Peter's Port. The island rises gently to 20m (65 feet), has an area of 75.8 ha (187 acres) and supports a few crofts. Its population fell to 13 (1961) and just 4 (1971), but has subsequently recovered to 11 (1981), 24 (1991), 19 (2001) and 20 (2011). A much larger Grimsay lies to the north between Benbecula and North Uist.
