An ornamental lake in the policies of The Hirsel in the Scottish Borders, Hirsel Lake (sometimes known as the Lake of the Hirsel) is located a mile (1.5 km) west northwest of Coldstream and a similar distance north of the River Tweed and the English Border. Created in 1786 as part of a designed landscape, it now forms part of the Hirsel Country Park. A hide is provided for bird-watching, with heron, little grebe, moorhen, mute swan, pochard, shoveler and tufted duck present in summer, together with goosander, water rails and whooper swans in winter. There are also reed bunting and sedge warbler in the associated reed beds.
