Glenlivet represents a substantial mixed-use estate in S Central Moray, lying between the Ladder Hills and Hills of Cromdale, and extending to 23471 ha (58,000 acres) across Glen Livet and the Strath Avon, forming the northeastern section of the Cairngorm National Park. The estate comprises more than thirty let farms, 3440 ha (8500 acres) of commercial forestry, a sporting tenancy including grouse moors, salmon beats and deer stalking, together with five Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs); namely the Ladder Hills, Lower Strathavon, Bochel Wood, Creag nan Gamhainn and Fodderletter Mire. Glenlivet was purchased by the Crown Estate in 1937 from the Duke of Richmond. The Crown Estate manages a property portfolio on behalf of the monarch, passing its revenue to the government.
The Lecht Ski Centre is located on estate land, together with several sites of historical interest, including the 18th century Catholic Seminary at Scalan, a 16th-century packhorse bridge over the Livet, together with Drumin, Deskie and Blairfindy Castles.
Public access is encouraged, with more than 100 miles (160 km) of waymarked paths and a Ranger Service is based at the Estate Office in Tomintoul.
