Port Eglinton

A small industrial area of S Glasgow, Port Eglinton lies to the east of the M8 motorway, a half-mile (1 km) northeast of Pollokshields and a mile (1.5 km) south of the city centre. Named after Hugh Montgomerie of Coilsfield, the 12th Earl of Eglinton (1739 - 1819), Port Eglinton was established as the Glasgow terminus of the Glasgow, Paisley and Johnstone Canal. The canal basin has long disappeared and a railway now follows much of the route of the former canal.
