Bay at the Back of the Ocean

(Camas Cuil an t-Saimh, Camus Cul an Taibh)

A wide bay on the west coast of Iona in the Inner Hebrides, the romantically-named Bay at the Back of the Ocean (Gael: Camas Cuil an t-Saimh or Camus Cul an Taibh) is situated a mile (1.5 km) west of the island's principal settlement, Baile Mor. Its white sandy beach is intermingled with low-lying outcrops of Lewisian Gneiss, while an area of machair and a few shallow sand dunes lie behind the beach. This machair represents common grazing land and is also the location for Iona Golf Course.
