Dwarfie Stane

(The Dwarfie Stone)

A large block of red sandstone on the Orkney island of Hoy, the Dwarfie Stane lies in a valley to the southeast of Ward Hill and beneath the Dwarfie Hamars ('Hamars' are crags). Comprising a passage and two hollowed-out chambers, it is thought to be the only example in Britain of a rock-cut chamber tomb and dates from around 3000 BC.
