Papa

One of Shetland's 'holy' islands, Papa lies to the west of the Mainland of Shetland and to the north of West Burra. It has an area of 59 ha (146 acres) and a maximum height of 32m (105 feet). Papa's coastline is deeply indented and a tidal channel joins it to the West Head of Papa. Occupied by early Christian missionaries, the island had a population of 36 in 1901 before being abandoned in the early 1930s.
