A small reservoir, one of many which lie on the slopes above Greenock in Inverclyde, Whinhill Reservoir is located 1¼ miles (2 km) south of the town centre. It is one of only a few of these reservoirs still operated by Scottish Water for the supply of drinking-water. Retained by an earth embankment dam, it covers an area of 6 ha (14 acres).
