Tanera Mor

(Tanera More)

The largest of the Summer Isles, Tanera Mor is located a mile (1.5 km) west of the northwest coast of Ross and Cromarty district in Highland Council, opposite Badentarbat Bay. Occupying an area of 310 ha (766 acres) and rising to a height of 122m (400 feet), Tanera Mor was a successful herring fishing port in the early 19th Century but suffered the same decline as much of the Scottish herring fleet. The island is home to herons, buzzard and red grouse as well as various seabirds. Although there are two settlements on the island, Ardnagoine and Garadheancal, the majority of the buildings are used as holiday homes. Its permanent population is recorded as 6 (1961), 2 (1971), 0 (1981), 0 (1991), 5 (2001) and 4 (2011). The island and its property were on the market for £2 million in 2015.
