Ardgowan Tower

(Inverkip Castle)

Located in the grounds of Ardgowan House, a late 18th century classical mansion, Ardgowan Tower (sometimes known as Inverkip Castle) lies a half-mile (1 km) north of Inverkip and dates from the 15th century. A castle has existed here since the 13th century. It was captured by the English during the Wars of Independence but, in 1307, the garrison commanded by Sir Philip Mowbray was besieged by Robert Boyd on behalf of Robert the Bruce and the English fled south to Ayrshire. The Stewarts acquired the lands and old castle in 1390 and it has passed down the generations since King Robert III gave it to his son on 5th May 1403. The family built the present three-storey tower, which was restored in 1936 and is now B-listed.
