The Toutties

A group of rocks at the northern end of Stonehaven Bay, the Toutties lies to the east of Cowie, a half-mile (1 km) northeast of Stonehaven. Designated a site of national and international importance by the Geological Conservation Review, it was here that the oldest land-living creature ever to be discovered was unearthed in 2004. The 1-cm (0.4-inch) long millipede Pneumodesmus newmani lived 420 million years ago.
