MOD West Freugh

An airfield that services a Ministry of Defence bombing range, which extends over the fore-shore and much of Luce Bay, MOD West Freugh is located 3 miles (5 km) north northeast of Sandhead and 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Stranraer. An airship base, RNAS Luce, was established at East Freugh during the First World War. West Freugh was constructed as an Armament Training Camp in 1936 and was expanded during World War II as a bombing range. The main runway is 1841m (6040 feet), with a secondary runway of 914m (3000 feet). Also including a tracking station, the site is run on a care-and-maintenance basis by defence contractor QinetiQ on behalf of the Ministry. A UFO sighting on the 4th April 1957 brought much press coverage and became known as the West Freugh Incident.
