Located a half-mile (1 km) east of Gretna, on the right bank of the River Sark, which forms the border with England, the Old Toll Bar proudly markets itself both as the "first house in Scotland" and the "last house in Scotland". It came to the fore after 1818 when a new bridge over the river was completed bringing the main road from England past the door. It was soon offering weddings to runaway couples and by the 1840s was noted for its low charges!
