A country house hotel located a mile (1.5 km) northeast of Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway, the Urr Valley Hotel began as Ernespie House. Built as a modest villa c.1800, it was extended twice in the 19th century and given a Jacobean porch, together with balustrades, crenellations and pediments above the windows, all in red sandstone, which contrasts pleasantly with the white-harled walls. It was subject to a further extension in the 20th century, this time to the southwest but still in sympathy with the overall form.
The hotel lies amongst 5.7 ha (14 acres) of landscaped grounds and is accessed by a half-mile (1-km) long tree-lined drive from the west.
