Gilbertfield Castle

A ruined 16th Century tower-house, Gilbertfield Castle is located next to Gilbertfield Farm on the northern slopes of Dechmont Hill, a half-mile (0.8 km) south of Flemington in South Lanarkshire. This L-plan tower comprises three storeys and an attic. The vaulted basement contained a kitchen and cellarage, with the hall on the first floor and private apartments on the floors above. It was the property of the Hamilton family and in the 18th century William Hamilton of Gilbertfield was responsible for translating Blind Harry's epic poem Wallace from Old Scots. The roof and one wall have collapsed but the castle remains B-listed.
