Colliston Park

The principal public park in Dalbeattie (Dumfries and Galloway), Colliston Park lies inside a meander of the Kirkgunzeon Lane just to the northeast of the town centre. The park was opened with great ceremony on the 18th July 1908, and takes its name from Miss Copland of Colliston who gifted the land to the town in 1900. Having formed part of the flood plain of the river, the area had to be drained, cleared of boulders and levelled. Footbridges were built across the river to provide entrances. A pond was constructed that later gained paddle-boats, and a cast-iron bandstand was also provided, the work of the Lyon Foundry in Kirkintilloch, which is now B-listed. The park also features a putting green, tennis courts and a play area for children. There is a football pitch and Islecroft Stadium lies immediately to the east.

There are various monuments, most notably the Dalbeattie War Memorial, which takes the form of a Mercat Cross and was unveiled in 1921. The park is also noted for its floral displays.
