Highland Park Distillery

Highland Park Distillery is located on the southern edge of Kirkwall in Orkney. It was founded by local farmer David Robertson in 1798, but greatly expanded by James Grant of Glenlivet from the 1890s. Ownership passed to Highland Distillers in 1937 and subsequently to the Edrington Group. This is Britain's most northerly whisky distillery, said by some to the most northerly in the world. It produces an award-winning single malt from peat-smoked barley and water sourced from onsite springs. There are two spirit still and two wash stills. The whisky is matured in sherry casks made from European and American oak, each imparting distinctive flavours. The distillery produces up to 2,700,000 litres of whisky per year.

Highland Park was the favourite tipple of Ian Rankin's fictional detective Inspector Rebus, with a limited edition Rebus 20 produced in 2007 to commemorate the anniversary of the publication of the first novel in the series. As well as a branded single malt, Highland Park finds its way into the Famous Grouse blend.

It has a visitor centre, which opened in 1986.
