Torvean Hill

A wooded ridge at the centre of a complex of eskers, Torvean Hill lies alongside the Caledonian Canal and River Ness 1½ miles (2.5 km) southwest of the centre of Inverness. One of the largest eskers in Britain, a gravel mound deposited under an ancient ice-sheet, Torvean is an important geomorphological feature. It has been significantly denuded by quarrying, but is now protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Another sizeable esker, in the form of Tomnahurich Hill, lies a half-mile (0.8 km) to the northeast.
