Loreburne Shopping Centre, Dumfries

The principal undercover retailing space in Dumfries (Dumfries and Galloway), Loreburne Shopping Centre lies in the town centre between Irish Street and the High Street, immediately to the east of the River Nith. There are twelve externally-facing shops on the pedestrianised High Street with a further twenty one retail outlets within the shopping centre itself. The anchor store is Marks & Spencer. Opened in 1991, the architects Scott, Brownrigg and Turner have done their best to hide this substantial building from view; its southeastern aspect (on Nith Place) is the most obvious, with bus stances and a prominent entrance. The centre includes an 82-space car park. Inside, the Centre makes considerable use of natural daylight from a glazed roof and atria. Stained glass windows, carved wooden panels and decorative lighting contribute to the style of the interior.
