Portsburgh

A small and ancient district of S Central Edinburgh, what remains of Portsburgh lies to the west of the Grassmarket. It existed as a burgh of barony, outside the walls of Edinburgh, between 1649 and 1856 and comprised the distinct settlements of Wester Portsburgh and Easter Portsburgh. The name was in danger of becoming extinct, and is now known only through three features located in the former Wester Portsburgh; namely Portsburgh Square, a group of deck-access tenements built as model housing in 1900 and restored in 1980; the privately-owned student residences at Portsburgh Court, which opened in 2006; and Wester Portsburgh Court House. Easter Portsburgh lay in the area now occupied by Bristo Square and Potterrow, extending as far east as Nicholson Square.
