Gladstone Monument

An elaborate memorial to four-times British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone (1809-98) located in Coates Crescent Gardens in W Central Edinburgh. Gladstone had dominated the Liberal Party for decades and had served as Member of Parliament for Midlothian between 1880 and 1895.

The monument was designed by James Pittendrigh MacGillivray (1856 - 1938) for this site, but following objections from local residents was never installed. It was erected in St Andrew Square in 1917, where is was unveiled on the 18th January by Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, himself a British Prime Minister but also a close friend of Gladstone who had managed his Midlothian Campaign. The monument was finally transferred here in 1955. The statue depicts a robed Gladstone in bronze on a red granite base surrounded by eight allegorical figures representing his virtues.
