Grut Wick

A small rocky inlet on the east coast of Lunna Ness in the NE of the Mainland of Shetland, Grut Wick is notable as the landfall of the Ninian pipeline bringing oil from the North Sea to the Sullom Voe Oil Terminal. This major pipeline connects several platforms, principally in the Ninian and Magnus fields and was completed in 1976. It is 36 inches (91 cm) in diameter and 109 miles (175 km) in length. From Grut Wick, the pipeline runs southwest to Culness where it crosses Lunna Sound to Firth Ness (Mossbank) and then runs in parallel with the Brent pipeline to Sullom Voe.
