Neidpath Tunnel

(South Park Tunnel; Peebles Tunnel)

An old railway tunnel which once carried the single-track Symington, Biggar and Broughton Railway beneath South Park Wood, the Neidpath Tunnel (also known as South Park or Peebles Tunnel) is located a mile (1.5 km) west of Peebles. It opened in 1864, is 550m (601 yards) in length and cost £14,431. For most of its length it is brick-lined, with the horseshoe-shaped portals constructed of ashlar. The tunnel was abandoned when the line between Peebles and Broughton closed on 7th June 1954. The Neidpath Viaduct forms the western approach to the tunnel.
