Village, The

A picturesque conservation area which represents the historic former village now surrounded by the New Town of East Kilbride, the Village lies a quarter-mile (0.5 km) to the north of the shopping mall which now forms the centre of the town. The cobbled streets and traditional buildings contrast markedly with the stark modernism of the larger part of the town. Historic buildings include the Old Parish Church (1774) with its distinctive square clock-tower and the Montgomerie Arms a hostelry dating from c.1719. The area is now known for its traditional speciality shops, together with restaurants and pubs.

The Village Project was launched in 1990 to enhance the character of the area.
