Neilston Railway Station

(Baille Nèill)

A railway station in Neilston (East Renfrewshire) which forms the terminus of a line from Glasgow via Cathcart, this station was once known as Neilston High and opened in 1903 on the former Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway. Now running electric passenger services, the line beyond Neilston closed to passenger service in 1932 and the track was subsequently lifted. Neilston is preceded by Patterton Railway Station, 3¾ miles (6 km) to the east. Operated by ScotRail, Neilston is staffed part-time and is used by 454,026 passengers per annum (2009-10). It is known as Baille Nèill in Gaelic and benefits from a park-and-ride facility.

A second station (Neilston Low, originally called Crofthead), had opened in 1855 on the Glasgow, Barrhead and Neilston line. This closed in 1966, although the line still operates with services to Kilmarnock.
