Darnrig Moss

A rare survival of a lowland raised bog, one of the last in Falkirk Council Area, Darnrig Moss is located on the Slamannan Plateau, 1½ miles (2.5 km) northeast of Slamannan and 3 miles (5 km) south southwest of Falkirk. Lowland raised bogs were often drained or exploited for their peat, but this has not happened at Darnrig. Parts of the bog were however damaged by open-cast coal mining and when a gas pipeline was laid across the area. It is now protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), which extends to 78 ha (192 acres) and has been subject to a programme of restoration.
